Typology of Comparatives
نویسنده
چکیده
It is well-known that an adjective is not a universal part of speech. As pointed out in the previous researches, many oceanic languages do not have a morphologically distinguished adjective class. The only criteria which distinguish adjectives from verbs and nouns could be whether they appear in comparative construction or not. However, even comparative construction is not universal. Whereas most languages have a specific morpheme to construct comparatives like inflection, some languages do not. In this paper I investigate various languages in the Pacific Asia region and discuss the difference in comparative construction in the framework of formal semantics. I suggest two parameters to distinguish the four language groups and propose a new typology of comparative construction.

This paper aims at offering a global picture of the subtype of comparative constructions known as ‘multi-headed comparatives’ (from the fact that they exhibit more than one comparative operator in semantic interdependence). As a prerequisite to the fulfilment of his goal, an attempt will be made to clarify the scope of the notion ‘comparative construction’ and to draw a general typology of such...
متن کاملDegree comparison without degree abstraction1
This paper argues that Mandarin Chinese fills a gap in the typology of comparative constructions in natural language. Beck et al. (2004) proposes that languages may vary in whether or not they allow for degree abstraction, and Kennedy (2007) proposes a distinction between comparative constructions with degree-denoting standards and individual-denoting standards. Based on these parameters, we ex...

متن کاملPhrasal comparatives in Japanese: A mea- sure function-based analysis
There has recently been much discussion about the proper analysis of Japanese comparatives (cf., e.g., Beck et al. 2004; Oda 2008; Hayashishita 2009; Kawahara 2009; Kennedy 2009). Most of the discussion in the previous literature centers around the question of whether the semantics of Japanese comparatives should be modelled on the analysis of English comparatives. Beck et al. (2004) have argue...
متن کاملMeasurement and Interadjective Comparisons
This paper shows the relevance of measurement theory for the linguistic analysis of comparative statements. In particular, the paper focusses on interadjective comparatives like ‘x is P -er than y is Q’ and comparatives involving multidimensional adjectives. It is argued that Bale’s (2008) recent proposal to account for such comparatives is rather limited, and just one way to account for intera...
